Men's Suits & Tuxedos
Slim jackets have a V-shape cut and are great for broad shoulders and a narrow waist. Fit runs small. We recommend ordering one size up.
Slim pants have a straighter cut from the waist through the hip/thigh. They are available in odd sizes and run small. We recommend ordering one size up from your typical casual pant size.
Modern jackets have straighter cut from the shoulders to the waist and provide more room at the waist than the slim fit. They run true to size.
Modern pants are designed to accommodate a narrow waist and more muscular hip/thighs. They are available in even sizes & run more true to size. We recommend ordering one size up from your typical casual pant size.
Suit sizes have one number and one descriptive word (for example, 38 short, 40 regular, 42 long). The number refers to your chest measurement, and the descriptive word refers to the length of the jacket. Typically, the pants’ waist size will be listed on the product page. The general rule: the measurement of pants’ size is 6 number smaller. For example: a 48 jacket will come with a 42 pants (waist).
Check your own measurements and look for additional size information on the product page to determine which size you should purchase.
THE MEASURE OF A MAN
HOW TO MEASURE FOR A SUIT
To get accurate measurements, you will need a soft measuring tape and a partner to help. Remove your outerwear and/or suit jacket when having your measurements taken. Of course, you can always stop in at any Men’s Wearhouse and one of our Expert Stylists will be happy to take your measurements.
IMPORTANT: The chest and overarm measurements are a guideline for the range of sizes that fit your frame. As a general rule, your chest measurement will be your jacket size.
Stand with your arms at your side. Have your partner wrap the tape measure around your arms and torso, making sure the tape is level across your shoulder blades in the back and the widest part of your chest in the front. Make sure you aren’t holding your breath or sucking in. Instead, breathe regularly and keep your body relaxed.
NOTE: To accommodate men with a large upper body, both measurements should be considered. If the difference between your chest and overarm measurements is greater than 7″, subtract 7″ from your overarm measurement to get your jacket size. For example, if your chest measures 40″ and your overarm measures 49″, the recommended jacket size is 42. We suggest trying on different sizes and fits so you can see what looks and feels best.
These measurements are a guide to help choose the size that will fit you best. Your exact size may vary depending on the designer label you choose.
Helpful Hints
- If your over-arm measurement is more than 7" larger than your chest measurement, choose a suit one size larger than your chest.
- Suits have what is called a "drop," which is the difference between the size of the jacket and the size of the pants. Classic/modern fit suits typically have a 6" drop, meaning that a size 48R jacket is paired with size 42 pants. Slim-fit suits typically have a 6" to 7" drop.
- Suit makers usually leave enough extra fabric at the seams to allow pants to be let out by 1" to 2". Pants can always be taken in.
